Aug 16 – Fort Carson Tour

The first place we toured on the base was the museum. Very nicely done, having been redone in the past few years. Then we went to the area where the monument to Kit Carson is located, and the Post’s Fallen Soldiers Memorial.

This week, the Fort Carson base was having their Iron Man activities. Click on the links below to read more about that, but in essence, it’s kind of like Olympics activities. As part of the reunion participants tour, we saw some mixed martial arts bouts. I thought that MMA was a combination of karate, judo, etc, but it turns out (at least in this case) that it’s a combination of boxing and wrestling. Not something I’m interested in (sports in general) but it was interesting for a one time basis. One of the female pairs were well matched with first one having the upper hand, then the other; back and forth. I also found out that a TKO (technical knock out) is basically the same as a KO except that the person isn’t actually knocked unconscious. One guy got his TKO in less than a minute, but most matches lasted several minutes.

Both Dave and I managed to get some shots of the paratroopers practicing for their jumps for the awards ceremony tomorrow.

We had lunch for $5.50 in the “mess hall” (called Wolf Dining Facility) – all the vets said it didn’t look like any mess hall in their experience. Like a fancy cafeteria as you can see in the photos.

On base, we and the others with scooter/wheelchairs were transported by accessible vans by Louis Duran, and Dominique Washington, great representatives of the base.

We also stopped at the PX, but the souvenir money we spent we divided between the gift shop and a military memorabilia store outside the main PX store.
