My Daddy was born in Vermont, his name being He(r)man A. Bassett. He always called himself "A Blue Bell Yankee." He died in Philadelphia the Centennial year of '76, aged 62.

This is a sketch of my life:
I was born August 27th, 1852. My people were crossing the plains to California from Keokuk, Iowa. There were five in our family: three boys and two girls. Their names were Manton, "Madason" (sp), Ralph, Martha, and Mary. I was born on the Truckey (sp) River, near the town of Wordsworth (sp) which is now a station on the C.P.R.R. in Nevada. We were six months crossing the Plains with oxen during which time we lost one ox so Daddy was obliged to work one of the milch cows in his place.

We first lived at Maryville, California from which place we moved to Petaluma, where my father kept a hotel, known as the Petaluma House. From there we moved to Sacramento, then to Elk Grove, 12 miles distant. Later we moved to Half Moon Bay near the Pacific Ocean, then to San Jose, where my mother died. From there we moved to Nevada; that is, my Daddy, and brother Manton moved. We followed mining for some time, when to Hampton, then to Pioche, where we were in '73; then went to Gold Hill in '74 where I worked in the mines.

In May 20th, 1876, I was married to Leah Rose Henroid, at Deep Creek, Utah. We lived in Pleasant Valley for some time. We had had born to us nine children: four boys and five girls, all being born in Nevada except one boy, who was born in Ogden. From Pleasant Valley we moved to Spring Valley where we lived 18 years. Followed cattle raising and dairying, during which I made two tons of butter in one year, packed it all 'til Fall, sold it then to the mining companies for 50 cents per pound. In 1900 we moved to American Fork.
