These notes for Edward DELONG were compiled by Karen Feisel, and are used with her permission. My hope is that her analysis will help others, and that somehow we can all come together to figure out his ancestors. One source gives Edward's birth date as October 18, 1790 and states he died in Oskaloosa, Marion Co., Iowa. This information is also shown on Lucille Ellsberry's family record. However, there is no "Oskaloosa" in Marion County, but there is an "Oskaloosa" in Mahaska County which is the area commonly stated to be where the DeLong's lived. Perhaps Mahaska County is a newer county that was formed from Marion County?

Info on Ancestry.com which came from DeLong researchers such as John Baldwin, Carla Nash, and Todd Reeves is as follows:
- 1799: Edward was no doubt living with his parents in Ohio Co., VA (now WV).
- 1802: He undoubtedly went with his parents to Guernsey Co. (then Belmont Co.), OH
- 1812: Served in War of 1812, substituting for his brother.
- 1820: Resided in Harrison Twp., Perry Co., OH
- 1821: Edward was granted Power of Attorney by his brother George, who was in Kentucky, regarding their father's estate.
- 1830: Resided in Walnut Twp., Fairfield Co., OH
- 1833: Resided in Walnut Twp. during land settlement of her (wife Rachel?) father's estate, quitclaim March 14, 1833.
- 1840: Resided in Harrison Twp., Perry Co., OH
- About 1842: Relocated to Iowa, the same year his sons Daniel and George moved to Iowa.
John Baldwin, a DeLong researcher, states that Edward substituted for his brother Joseph's furlough in the War of 1812 which is confirmed by Edward's widow Rachel's application and approval for bounty land.

Land records state that on March 15, 1816 Edward DeLong of Coshocton County (which was formed in 1811) purchased land located in Range nine, Township Five, Section 19 -- which today would be Jackson Twp., Noble County, OH.
According to "The Compendium of American Genealogy 1600-1800, Vol. V Lineage Records" Edward was in the War of 1812. An internet researcher, Gerald DeLong, states that Edward and his brother David eventually moved to farms within about three miles of each other in Perry Co., OH. Then they both went to Iowa in the early 1840's. Edward ended up in Mahaska County.
In 1833 Edward DeLong -- whose residence was in Perry County, OH -- bought two pieces of land, both located in Range 15, Township 16, each containing 38.91 acres - one piece of land being in the Southeast quarter of the Southeast quarter of Section 24 - and the other piece of land being in the Southwest quarter of the Southeast quarter of Section 24. Karen Feisel has on file a copy of the land patents for both of these purchases, one of which is dated Apr. 30, 1835 and the other Sept. 23, 1835. (The patent, which is what a deed was called when land was purchased from the government, was issued after the actual purchase date, and such issuance could be months or years after the purchase date.) From range and township maps it appears these two pieces of land were in Harrison Twp., Perry Co., OH - with Section 24 being approx. 3-4 miles west of Crooksville.
The 1820 Census for Perry Co., OH - Harrison Twp. - shows Edward Delong and then David Delong on the very next line. The census details for Edward's household are: one male age 26 thru 44; one male under age 10; one female age 16 thru 25; one female under age 10; one individual involved in agriculture. A further tie to that location is the baptism record of Edward's son "Joseph". Also a document concerning the sale of lands of deceased George DeLong (Edward's father) states that Edward and his wife Rachel were residents of Perry Co., OH in 1822.
One source mentions that Edward may have died in Marion Co., IA.
Researcher James Wright of Royal, IL paid a professional researcher to examine information pertaining to the DeLong family. Much of the information on Edward DeLong comes from that package of information. The researcher was Jeffrey L. Dawson of Ottumwa, IA who did the work in 1997.
Edward and Rachel arrived in Mahaska Co., Iowa in 1843 and a number of their descendants remained in the vicinity of the town of Beacon. Edward purchased a farm in Garfield Twp. His oldest son, Tilman, stayed in Ohio. A biography provided by James Wright states that the DeLong family took part in activities at Riverside Church, located at the north end of the old Eveland bridge. Some of the family were active members in the Grange. There is also a statement about the Des Moines River providing good recreation and fishing but also caused problems by flooding. The biography was written by Adah DeLong Hoit, a granddaughter of Edward and Rachel.
Edward and his wife Rachel, as well as some of their descendants are buried in Garfield Twp., Mahaska Co., IA at a cemetery, which for brevity in these records, has been entered as the "DeLong Cemetery". Karen Feisel has on file a small photo of the cemetery, titled "DeLong/DeLashmutt Cemetery (Six Mile Cemetery), Sec. 31, Garfield Twp." The photo is captioned with information stating that restoration of gravestones was completed in 2003 by DeLong Family descendants, that access is public, but a remote location, contact Commission for visitor information. Its stated history is that "Van DeLashmutt and Edward DeLong each donated adjoining 1/2 acres in area known as the Six Mile Prairie. Cemetery was platted in 1854." Surnames of others buried there are: Davis, Delashmutt, Godfrey, Jackson, Taylor, Thrash, Demoss, Totten, Whitney, Wilson.
Roger DeLong, an internet correspondent, says that Edward was an attorney.
