| Story* | Email dated 20 Oct 2000 Hi to All from Bob Pipes of the Pipes family Home Page, www.execpc.com/~pipesb I thought it would be important to all of you to know some important information that I was recently made aware of by a Pipes descendant. I have done some digging based on this information and may have shed some new light on the family of Joseph Pipes of SW Pennsylvania. In September of this year I received an E Mail from a Barbara Smith of Eugene, Oregon. She told me that she had notes that were copied by her mother from an old family bible that belonged to her aunt. The bible is long gone, but she told me about the notes and asked if I could connect her Pipes ancestors to the family tree. The Ancestor she told me about was named Phoebe (Pipes) Allard. She gave me a birth year of 1846, place unknown ( but possibly Canada) and a death date of 1909 in Yakima, Washington. (she includeda picture of Phoebe) None of that made any sense to me, but the other info sure got my attention. She said that Phoebe Pipes' father was Joseph Pipes b. 9/4/1809 and d. 10/25/1849, places unknown and her mother was Hannah Johnson, b. 12/25/1811 and died 10/8/1878, again, places unknown. None of any possible brothers or sisters for Phoebe were listed in the bible notes. [The only way to keep track of this is to call Joseph Pipes(1763-1856), who lived in SW Pa. as Joseph Sr. and to call his son Joseph Jr.] The name Joseph Pipes and the name Hannah of course reminded me of the 1835 deed that Kathryn Bassett first told us about in Pennsylvania that named "Joseph Pipes and his wife Hannah" which led us to believe that this may have been the name of the wife of Joseph Sr. There are many Joseph Pipes in our history but the only one that might have been born in 1809 was the Joseph Jr., son of Joseph Sr. The next and most important clue was that Barbara told me that her Phoebe Pipes was married to a Henry Allard in August of 1861 and that they lived in Cedar Co., Iowa because that's where Barbara's mother was born. I remembered from Dorothy Hennen's book and the list of Joseph Sr.'s children given there, that there was a son named Joseph listed and it said that he possibly married a Chloe Sanders and that she had moved to Iowa. It only said "She Moved", nothing of Joseph Jr. and it gives no clue as to the source of the statement. I next remembered that there had been confusion about a probate entry in Greene Co., Pa. in 1850 that was for a Joseph Pipes. Sherry Norton and I puzzled over that one, because we knew that Joseph Sr. died in 1856. Sherry looked it up and determined that this was another Joseph, but we were not sure who it was. I also remembered that there were several entries for the name of Pipes in the state of Iowa in some census indexes, but I had never looked at them to determine who they were connected to. The story took shape when I looked at the Census in 1850 for Iowa. In Linn Co., Iowa there is an entry for a Jonathan Pipes. He is 20 years old and in the home with him are his mother, Hannah Pipes, age 41 and a brother named Daniel, age 16, a sister named Charity, age 10, and Phoebe, age 4. All of them were born in Pennsylvania. This census was taken in October, 1850. Subsequesnt census records show the family and the children in the same general area and marriage records show up for some of them. I am sure that this Phoebe is the same one named in the bible notes, because her mother, Hannah (Pipes) Kendall witnessed the marriage record. In October of 1851, Hannah Pipes married Sanford Kendall as her second husband in Scott Co. (there is an official record of this marriage.) In 1853 Jonathan married a Phoebe Holland, (this Phoebe Holland was born in Canada, leading to the confusion mentioned earlier about Phoebe Pipes birth place.) later, Charity married a man named Ellis and then Phoebe Pipes is shown marrying Henry Allard in August of 1861. Anyway, to sum all of this up: Joseph Jr. must have married Hannah Johnson about 1829 in Greene Co. Pa. They had four children and it was their names in the 1835 deed. Joseph and his family are in the 1840 census in Morris Twp., Greene Co.. Joseph dies in October of 1849, his estate is probated in April of 1850. Hannah and children are not in the Greene Co, census for 1850, taken in June, but they are in Linn Co., Iowa in October of 1850 for the Census taken there. I admit I need to find a bit more documentation, like a marriage record for them in Greene Co; The estate settlement for Joseph in Greene Co; some church records etc. But I think there is a good case here for all of the info making sense. If this is true then that means that we have identified all of the childen of Joseph Sr. and we know something of each of them. This also raises some other points: 1. This means that the name of Joseph Sr.'s wife is not known again. (unless, by coincidence, her name was also Hannah) 2. The picture that was sent to me last year that purports to be Joseph Pipes Sr. is in more doubt. If you read the story that came with the picture it mentions "his wife Hannah". This picture is of a man to old to be Joseph Jr., who died in 1849 at age 40. So who is in the picture? 3. Why was neither Joseph Jr. or his wife Hannah and her children mentioned in the estate settlement papers that named all of Joseph Sr.'s other children, even those with dead spouses? 4. I know that John Hawkins had speculated that there may have been another son born to John Pipes and Eleanor Slater. ( based on the early census records.) Is it possible that this Joseph Jr. was a son of John and Eleanor and not Joseph Sr.? I could use some help in Greene Co. Penn. to look for some probate and marriage records.
