pg 358 - Since 1874 there have been a number of blacksmiths operating shops within the village (this is Chardon chapter of book). ... John Hardacre worked at blacksmithing in Chardon and elsewhere many years. Christopher T Usher, who had been in partnership with Hardacre, bought his interest and continued. Oliver Bassett conducted a general carriage and wagon repair business in the rear part of this shop, located on Washington Street. This old shop was formerly the old Chardon Tannery located on Water Street and had to be moved when Tilden Avenue was cut through. at Geauga Co., Ohio.

It also says he was born in Kirtland OH, father Oliver Harmon b.VT and mother Merina b.Scotland. The informant was his wife, and he was buried in Chardon OH.

Monday From a Fall: He Will Be Buried In Chardon On Wednesday
     Injuries sustained a month ago in a fall, caused the death of Oliver H Bassett, aged 87, who died Monday, March 25, at his home, 1175 Burridge Avenue, Mentor.
     Mr Bassett was born in Kirtland in 1847, but the greater part of his life wa spent in Mentor. He was a wagonmaker by trade and for several years was engaged in that work in Chardon. About 18 years ago he and his family returned to Mentor.
     Besides the widow, Mrs Ella Benton Bassett, he leaves two sones, Lynn of California, and Harmon of Wickliff, and four grandchildren.
     The funeral services will be held at the late residence Wednesday at 2 p.m., Rev John J Scott of Mentor, officiating. Burial will be in Chardon cemetery.
     Mr Bassett was first employed in Chardon by O.G. Thayer, gunsmith, in 1869-70, in a small building back of where the high school now stands.
