These notes for JAMES DELONG, SR. were compiled by Karen Feisel, and are used with her permission. My hope is that her analysis will help others, and that somehow we can all come together to figure out his ancestors. According to "The Compendium of American Genealogy 1600-1800, Vol. V Lineage Records", James was in the War of 1812.
James and his wife Agnes were living in Guernsey Co., OH on Dec .21, 1822 as corroborated by documents of that date concerning the sale of James' father George DeLong's property.

Info on Ancestry.com, gathered from such people as John Baldwin, Carla Nash, and Todd Reeves indicates the following regarding James:
1790 - Lived with parents in Mifflin Co. (now Centre Co.), PA
1799 - Probably went to Ohio Co., VA with his parents. His son was born in VA 1801-1802.
1802 - Would have settled in Guernsey (then Belmont) Co., OH with parents.
1807 - On March 17, 1807 he bought 160 acres, NW 1/4 of Section 22, Twp. 1, Range 1, in then Muskingum Co. on March 17. (See also "A Listing of Entrymen on Lands in Guernsey Co., Ohio.") (Susan Couch's genealogy compilation states on March 17, 1807 he bought 160 acres, the SW 1/4 of Section 22 in Range 01, Township 01, then Muskingum Co., OH.)
1812 - Served in Capt. Beatty's Co., Guernsey Co. Militia, War of 1812
1812 - Received a patent on 1807 land on Dec. 12 (ref. his dau. Angeline & husband's quit- claim 1849)
1820 - Census for Richland Twp. fits the known eight children plus one extra female, possibly his widowed mother.
182? - Guernsey County juror
1825 - On Guernsey Co. tax list
1830 - Richland Twp. census.
1835 - (From Susan Couch's compilation) - Guernsey County land grant, Range 01, Twp. 01, Section 22.
1835-1839 - Both James and his wife died, Agnes before James, in Wayne Twp., Noble Co., OH.
1835 - Sheriff's sale of James' land (Guernsey Times Sept. 5)
1839-1840 - Distribution was made of his property among his children (Guernsey Co. records). (Susan Couch adds the following info: son George S. sold to his brother Simpson his 1/7 share, and on the same day sold his own and George's total 2/7ths to James Jr. On May 21 Jonathan sold his 1/7th to James Jr. On Apr. 7, 1840 Alexander sold his 1/7th to James Jr. All of these indentures describe the land and clearly state that the deceased James was their father, per Guernsey Courthouse records. George and Simpson received $50 each, Alexander $30, Jonathan $17.)
1845 - (From Susan Couch's records) - On May 19th Nancy Thompson sold her 1/4th of a 1/7th part to James Jr., per courthouse records Jan. 18, 1849. She received $50.
1849 - (From Susan Couch's records) - On Feb. 3, Robert and Angelina Finley of Jefferson Co. sold to James DeLong of Guernsey Co. land which is fully described and giving the patent date to James DeLong. No indication is made that it was a 1/7th share which it must have been. The sum recorded is $1200 which is totally out of line with the amounts received by her siblings. If numerals were used, perhaps $120 was intended. See Guernsey Co. courthouse records.
1849 - (From Susan Couch's records) - On Feb. 21, William and Rebecca Hafer sold their 1/4 of a 1/7th share to James Jr. and received $25.
(Susan Couch states, "Thus by this point James Jr. had added 6/7ths to his own 1/7th, the one share which was in four parts being that of an obviously deceased sister who married a Thompson and had four daughters.

Deed records show land being purchased in 1807 by James DeLong, who residence was Muskingum Co., and the patent (deed) being issued Dec. 14, 1812, for 160 acres, situated in Range One, Township One, the Northwest quarter of Section 22, which was Richland Twp., Guernsey Co., OH. This is confirmed by the deed indices for Guernsey County which show the 1812 deed in Vol. L, pg. 130. (It was entirely normal for the patent/deed to be issued years after the purchase date, as it often took that long for paperwork to be handled in those days.)
A publication titled "Stories of Guernsey County" by Wolfe, which is on file at the Guernsey County Genealogical Society, states on page 246 that James DeLong and Joseph Ward were in Capt. Beatty's Company, War of 1812, militia of Guernsey County. Capt. Cyrus P. Beatty was "of Cambridge."
The book "Gateway to the West" by Ruth Bowers and Anita Short - Volume 1- pg 543 has a list of land records for Guernsey Co., OH which includes James DeLong acquiring land in 1812, in Section 22, Township 1, Range 1. The complete record is listed as being located in Volume L, pg. 130, at the county Recorder's office.
The book "Portrait and Biographical Record of Guernsey County, Ohio" published by C. O. Owen & Co. in 1895 states on pages 508-509 that among the citizens from Guernsey County who participated in the War of 1812 was James DeLong.
