These notes for DAVID DELONG were compiled by Karen Feisel, and are used with her permission. My hope is that her analysis will help others, and that somehow we can all come together to figure out his ancestors. An internet researcher, Gerald DeLong, states that David and his brother Edward eventually moved to farms within about three miles of each other in Perry Co., OH. Then in the early 1840's they moved on to Iowa, where David located in Washington County.
The 1820 Census for Perry Co., OH - Harrison Twp. - shows David Delong with his brother Edward Delong listed on the line directly above him. The census details for David's household are: one male age 26 thru 44; three males under age 10; one female age 16 thru 25; one individual employed in agriculture. A further tie to that location is the baptism record of David's son John.
A descendant of David (Cindy at Xochitl02@aol.com) states he was born in Maryland but this seems unlikely.
On Dec. 21, 1822 David and his wife Jane were residents of Perry Co., OH as evidenced by a document concerning the sale of lands of deceased George DeLong (David's father).
Ancestry.com shows the following information compiled by such DeLong researchers as John Baldwin, Carla Nash, and Todd Reeves:
- 1790: David would have been with his parents in Mifflin Co. (now Centre Co.), PA
- 1799: He would have been with his parents in Ohio Co., VA (now WV)
- 1802: No doubt he was with his parents in Guernsey Co. (then Belmont Co.), OH
- 1812: David served in the War of 1812 (1856 affidavit). He is likely the name read as "Daryl", belonging to the "Guernsey or Belmont" Regt. (Ohio Soldiers in War of 1812 booket).
- 1820: David is listed in the census for Harrison Twp., Perry Co., OH -- and also in the census for 1830 and 1840.
- 1841: About this time David and family moved to Cedar Twp., Washington Co., IA.
- 1850: Is listed in the census for Washington Co., IA.
- 1856: Iowa State Census.
- 1856: David personally appeared on Sept. 13th before the clerk of the District Court of Washington Co., and at age 70 swore that he was a Private in Capt. Absolem Martin's Company of Guernsey Co. Served 14 days from Aug. 1st to Aug. 14, 1812. Reserved 40 acres of land. Declared he married Jane Law.
Karen Feisel has on file "A Listing of Entrymen on Lands in Guernsey Co., Ohio" which shows that on March 13, 1813 David DeLong, whose residence is shown as Guernsey County, acquired land located at Range 09, Township 08, Section 02 (which would today be Richland Twp. of Guernsey County), the Southwest 1/4 of that section, comprising 160 acres. Another source references a date of March 30, 1811 for acquisition of land in that same range-township-section but does not show what portion of Section 02 was purchased.
There is a record showing that David DeLong, whose residence is shown as Muskingum Co., OH, purchased land on Dec. 25, 1813, located at Range 14, Township 14, Section 28 -- which on maps would appear to either be Harrison Twp., Perry County or York Twp., Morgan County. Perry County was formed in 1818 and Morgan County in 1819, so perhaps at the time of this land purchase the property was considered to be in Muskingum County. Based on the following land acquisition, it appears this property would have been in Perry County.
Karen Feisel has on file a copy of a land patent (which is what we would today call a deed) dated April 2, 1832 showing the acquisition by David DeLong (WHOSE RESIDENCE IS SHOWN AS PERRY COUNTY) of property in Morgan County, OH, 80 acres, located at Range 14, Townsip 14, the West half of the Northwest quarter of Section 27. The property was purchased on April 18, 1831, but back then it took months or years before the new owner actually received his patent from the government.
