Genealogy Is My Bag

In 1978 I was talking to a lawyer who was full-blood Apache Indian. Conversing with him brought up the memory of my grandmother telling me about some Indian blood in the family. Research eventually revealed that there were no Indian ancestors, but by that time the genealogy bug had truly bitten. All these years later, I have more than 350 direct line spots filled in on my pedigree, and over 450 on my husband's.

Researching for others has kept me so busy that I have had to put my own research on the back burner for the most part. But as of Dec 1999 I resolved to start putting my ancestry on these pages.

From 1984 through 1997, I was the Southern California representative for Family Roots™ genealogy program by Quinsept. The support I continue to do in regards to that program is outlined on my Tech Support page on the Family Roots link from menu to the left.

Many people who know of my interest in genealogy have asked what resources are available on the Internet. Here's some help in the three main categories: E-mail lists, Web pages, and Newsgroups.

[In 1996, I spoke on that subject at the Santa Barbara PC User's Group. They turned my suggestions into a web page, which eventually was the impetus to finally make one of my own. The link to them is my way of showing thanks.]

I do not plan on keeping the links on this page up to date. However, since most of them have been stable for a long time, they should be good links for a long time to come.

Mailing Lists: The most popular mailing list for genealogy enthusiasts is Roots-L. Once you subscribe (it's free), you can also "post" messages to the list. Your posted messages will then be sent to all other subscribers. To subscribe, send an E-mail message to

ROOTS-L-request@rootsweb.com.

The subject line should be blank or contain only a period or space. The message body should contain only the line:

subscribe Roots-L firstname lastname

Disable your "sig" file while you subscribe because the extra lines may confuse the list server and be interpreted as unwanted commands. If your subscription is processed successfully, you will receive a welcome message and instructions on how to post as well as how to unsubscribe, so be sure to keep it.

ROOTS-L home page is at http://www.rootsweb.com.

Web Sites: Not all of these URL's are specifically for genealogy, but they are links that I use frequently.

The US GenWeb Project started as a grass-roots effort to have resources available on the internet for every county in every state in the union. It has succeeded tremendously with something for almost everywhere. Some counties have more resources than others, so check out your county of interest -- you may be pleasantly surprised.

The #1 source for over 25,000 categorized genealogy links is Cyndi Howe's page. Cyndi has won the Golden Web award as well as other awards. This is the most organized jump off point on the entire web for genealogy. She really does a great job, and keeps it current as best as possible.

The "All-in-One Genealogy Search Page" enables on-line genealogy research utilizing the BEST resources and sites on the internet.

The two best places for finding people are Switchboard and InfoSpace - nationwide telephone directories. You can do lookups by a variety of ways, including "reverse".

Don't spend the money on the various phone CD's until you try these out. You can look up those long lost relatives on the net for free.

Another place to search for someone's E-mail address is the Yahoo People Search. It's one place where a lot of people register their address for others to find.

Google Usenet Archives (formerly DejaNews) - search Usenet groups

GNIS Online Data Base - search for geographic features

Geographic Names Information System is a wonderful tool that our taxes pay for. If you know a place name but not the state, enter it and get a list of all of them. Want a list of all the cemeteries in a particular county? That can be searched as well. Then, once you find the place you want, you may choose to bring up a map showing exactly where it is.

Newsgroups: All of the groups except alt.genealogy are moderated. I don't keep up to date on all the soc.genealogy hiararchy, so there have probably been more added or they may be gone by now.
