Event-Misc*  Robert Speece is desended from William Ankrom and Mary Elizabeth Howell. In 2006, he is 85 years old. In 1965, he took a photo of the log house of Jacob Lewis (the young people in photo are his children). The next time he was on Sheet's Run was in 1975 by which time the log house was gone. All that remained of William Ankrom's log house was pile of some chimney stones. The properties in the area had been purchased for back taxes and the log houses had been removed from the area, some to be disassembled and reassembled elsewhere.
Robert said that prior to 1965, the last time he was on Sheet's Run was 1938 just before he entered the Marine Corp. At that time, Jacob Lewis' log house was owned and occupied by Maggie Greenwalt who acquired it in 1905 through her father's will. She was 75 and living alone as she always had. Her father, John T Greenwalt had purchased it from Levi Steed, who acquired it from Abraham Howell, William Ankrom's fatherinlaw. It was from Jacob Lewis' house that William Ankrom's brotherinlaw went off to the Civil War never to return from Andersonville.
William Ankrom purchased 50 acres on the south side of Sheets Run along Cedar Run and for awhile lived in a house there which he later gave to a daughter. Meanwhile, he purchased from a man named Morgan, one acre on the north side of Sheets Run. In the deed for the one acre, the deed refers to the parcel as "formerly the Sheets Run School House". With the Jacob Lewis house only 100 yards away and all those kids, is it possible that some of them went to school in the Sheets Run School House?
TO DO write up my experience on the 2006 WV trip trying to find out how/when did Howel get land from Jacob?, tracing Ankrom's one acre in deed books and attempting to take current pictures of the area.1
