Birth*13 January 1851 Mahala Elizabeth Kile was born on 13 January 1851 at Doddridge Co., West Virginia, Birth date from Bible transcript which says "Mahaney born Jan the 13, 1851. Great granddauther Dee Haas (deehaas1@msn.com) says that her full given name is Sarah Elizabeth, some say its Mahala Elizabeth, and that her nickname to the family was "Betsy."1
(InHomeOf) Census18601860 She appeared on the 1860 census in the household of George Washington Kile, pg 15 #105-105, West Union, Doddridge Co., West Virginia. Her info on the census included - Kyle, Betsy 12 b.VA.
Marriage*21 June 1866 Mahala Elizabeth Kile married Abraham Ash, son of Jacob Ash and Mary (Hannah?) Underwood (1797 PA - 1878), on 21 June 1866 at Doddridge Co., West Virginia, pg 256 of marr book SLC 838210 - Bible says four children, which was probably the number of children living since she had more.
Background* Mahala Elizabeth Kile and Abraham Ash have the following backgound information available      Bertha (Mrs Charles) Ash told her granddaughter Janet Ash (Rt 5 Box 61-A Minden LA 71005 in 1984) that while fording a stream, there was a flash flood. Abraham had daughters Zula & Missouri in arms while Elizabeth held on to him. Janet's letter then says that "she lost her grip on Abraham and drown". Something is wrong about this, because both Abraham and Elizabeth married again. I hypothesized that they had to have divorced but great granddauther Dee Haas (deehaas1@msn.com) said:
"They were never divorced. At the time she obtained her marriage license she stated she was "widowed" when according to the census records Abraham was indeed alive. During the years I believe (not certain without checking my records) Abraham was arrested by the Union Army during the civil war for being a southern sympathizer and was put in a prisoner of war camp in Ohio called Camp Chase. Abraham and Elizabeth's father were both arrested and taken right out of their homes in Doddridge County WV. So did she lie ? or did she believe him to be dead in a prisoner of war camp in another state? (In any case) the Eliza that drowned could have been another wife of Abraham since it definitely was not my great grandmother." - - - or Bertha may have been mistaken and got that drowning mixed up with someone else.
There is nothing in the index to Chancery court to indicate they divorced either. The one for 1865 from Eliza is there, but not for Mahala. Even if Mahala Elizabeth honestly believed she was a widow, what was Abraham's excuse for his subsequent marriage?
Census1870*1870 Mahala Elizabeth Kile appeared on the 1870 census as the head of household, an unknown place . Her info on the census included where is she? Future husband Wm Mahaney is still with previous wife, And Abraham Ash is with his new wife. Not found her under any name variation.
Marriage*after 1870 She married William Mahaney-Mahana after 1870 he was in 70's and had previous marriages.
(InHomeOf) Census18801880 Mahala Elizabeth Kile appeared on the 1880 census in the household of William Mahaney-Mahana, ED 119 pg 326c #67-67, McClellan, Doddridge Co., West Virginia. Her info on the census included - Mahana, Elizabeth 30 b.VA wife.
Census1900*1900 Mahala Elizabeth Kile appeared on the 1900 census as the head of household, ED 24 sht 5a pg 273 #81-82, McClellan, Doddridge Co., West Virginia, along with Jeremiah Mahaney-Mahana, Mary Mahaney-Mahana and Stephen E Mahaney-Mahana. Her info on the census included Mahaney, Elizabeth 48 b.WV Jun 1852 (discrepency, s/b Jan 1852) widow, age at first marriage blocked out, 8 children, 4 living.
Death*25 March 1910 Mahala Elizabeth Kile died on 25 March 1910 at age 59      Bible transcript says "Mahaney born Jan the 13, 1851. dead. 4 children". Doesn't give date of death. Implication is that she died as a Mahania (death line) or Mahaney (other line). Death date from tombstone.1
Burial* She was buried at Underwood Cemetery, near Ashley, Doddridge Co., West Virginia, At the library in West Union is a notebook of cemetery listings (actually 2 notebooks). At the end of the main list, is a list of names from the 1940 WPA list that "were not found or no longer readable" including "Kyle, Mahana Eliz.
