(Witness) Military | | Per Janet Ash 810 Sexton Rd Minden, LA 71055-7392 318-371-0820 (2005 address) - Abraham Ash, his mother (Mary Underwood Ash) and brother Absolom, lived in Doddridge Co WV, a border area during the Civil War. They were southern sympathizers and had sabatoged the B & O Railroad for the south. One brother was captured by Union soldiers, his eye pushed out and filled with sand. These Ashes were originally from southern Pennsylvania. At the end of the war, Abraham & Absolom moved into southern WV to escape prosecution. Janet's dad was the source for this information. He said that it might have been an uncle or cousin. And a cousin fits this next story that has a picture to back it up. Look in the index for Amos Ash, and read the story there. Amos is first cousin to Abraham and Absolom. Steve Ash AMASCASH3@aol.com believes that the one eye story belongs to John G Ash, son of Jacob Ash and Isabelle Marsh, who is 1st cousin once removed from Amos. John worked for the B+O Railroad and did serve in a Union Prison Camp near Columbus, Ohio. But since there is a picture to prove the eye story belongs to Amos, the stories were probably mixed up. |
Divorce* | 22 December 1865 | Abraham Ash and Eliza Roberts were divorced on 22 December 1865 at Doddridge Co., West Virginia; Final recorded bk 1 pg 344 (SLC 1618032) - grounds of her adultery. File is #262 which is not filmed. |
Marriage* | 21 June 1866 | Abraham Ash married Mahala Elizabeth Kile, daughter of George Washington Kile and Sarah Underwood, on 21 June 1866 at Doddridge Co., West Virginia, pg 256 of marr book SLC 838210 - Bible says four children, which was probably the number of children living since she had more. |
Sources | 1868 | Source(s): Abraham also involved in an 1868 suit in bk 2 pg 71+ and bk 3 pg 14. File #340 - might be worth ordering in 1868. |
Background* | | Abraham Ash and Mahala Elizabeth Kile have the following backgound information available Bertha (Mrs Charles) Ash told her granddaughter Janet Ash (Rt 5 Box 61-A Minden LA 71005 in 1984) that while fording a stream, there was a flash flood. Abraham had daughters Zula & Missouri in arms while Elizabeth held on to him. Janet's letter then says that "she lost her grip on Abraham and drown". Something is wrong about this, because both Abraham and Elizabeth married again. I hypothesized that they had to have divorced but great granddauther Dee Haas (deehaas1@msn.com) said: "They were never divorced. At the time she obtained her marriage license she stated she was "widowed" when according to the census records Abraham was indeed alive. During the years I believe (not certain without checking my records) Abraham was arrested by the Union Army during the civil war for being a southern sympathizer and was put in a prisoner of war camp in Ohio called Camp Chase. Abraham and Elizabeth's father were both arrested and taken right out of their homes in Doddridge County WV. So did she lie ? or did she believe him to be dead in a prisoner of war camp in another state? (In any case) the Eliza that drowned could have been another wife of Abraham since it definitely was not my great grandmother." - - - or Bertha may have been mistaken and got that drowning mixed up with someone else. There is nothing in the index to Chancery court to indicate they divorced either. The one for 1865 from Eliza is there, but not for Mahala. Even if Mahala Elizabeth honestly believed she was a widow, what was Abraham's excuse for his subsequent marriage? |
