Kim Parker I have Samuel Ash's bible, and have done some pretty extensive research into his death. My mother was given an old steamer trunk when her grandmother Mary Weekly Ash, wife of Jesse Ash passed on. This has in turn been left to my oldest daughter Stephanie. While going through it one day, I found this bible, and began to get very interested in the Ash side of my family. I have many old photos of the Ash family also. Hopefully I will be able to upload them someday soon. Everything italisized is Nancy Ann Underwood Ash's own words. Found in Bible: (Exact words in writing, by Nancy Ann Underwood Ash) Samuel Ash his Book, Samuel Ash was Born March the 31 1820 Nancy A. ( I did major research into the death of Samuel and found the "Johnson's Island" is the little island off the coast of Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio in which was used for a prison camp at the time. He died of Typhoid Fever in which he contracted during his move from Mississippi where he was captured by the Union, to the Prison Camp in Ohio.) I do have the company he was in, but can't find it right now....I promise to dig it out!!! He died in January, was kept in cold storage till February and then shipped home.) All in all, from start to finish, Samuel was only alive about 3 months after joining the Conferderate Army in Mississippi. Nancy Ann Underwood Ash then married C.R. Gain August 25, 1864. He, C.R. Gains, died September 18 1884. I hope you enjoy the info I'm sending, and if I can be of any more help, please don't hesitated to let me know. I would guess this makes us cousins, and I'm pleased to meet you cousin Kathryn. |
