Ventura - A Ventura carpenter, Richard D. Ash, 36, of 561 South Brent street, was booked in the city jail last night, charged with attempted arson and assault with a deadly weapon.
     Ash was spotted apparently pouring gasoline on upholstery of a car at the rear of an eas-end bar by a bus boy who told the owner of the car, Leora Miller, 39, of 52 West Barnett street, a cocktail waitress, according to a police report.
     Mrs. Miller, the report said, is a former wife of Ash. When she ran out to the car, the report alleged, Ash threatened her with a pocket knife but drove away when she ran back into the bar.
     Ash returned about 11:30 pm, when police arrested him. They reported he had a loaded .22 rifle on the front seat of his car.

Obituary12 November 1968 His obituary: on 12 November 1968 Richard Dwane (sic) Ash, 43, of 1475 Palm Terrace, Pasadena, Calif. died Nov. 7, at his home following a heart attach (sic).
     He was born at West Union, Aug. 10, 1925, a son of the late Tillman E Ash and Mrs Estella Ferrel Ash of Weston, who survives.
     Also surviging are his widow, Virginia Reed Ash, four step-daughters, Gwendolyn, Kathryn, Susan and Bonnie, and one stepson, William: one (sic) sister; Mrs. Harry L. (Betty) Underwood, Weston and Mrs Norman G. (Eleanor) Rhinehart, Altadena, Calif.
     Mr Ash was a member of the Latter Day Saints Church at Pasadena. He was a veteran of World War II.
     The above obit has several points to be corrected. Cause of death was suicide, but since his mother had not been told that fact, it was reported as a heart attack. His middle name is misspelled, and there were the two sisters. Uncle Duane joined the LDS church but never followed through with attendance or any other interest in it, or any other church attendance.
