HUNTER Residence MUNCIE, DELAWARE CO, INDIANA Walter's birth information is from page 40 of Delaware County Book H-4 and his application for his second marriage. His date of death is from this grave marker that he shares with his wife. However, the 1900 Delaware County census appears to report he is eight years old and born in August 1891, although the dates are written over. Moreover, page 20 of Delaware County Book H-4 lists a Secrist born on 21 August 1891, but gives no first name. We assume that this is also for Walter. The Delaware County Supplemental Birth Records (Book C3, page 482) gives 22 August 1886 as his date of birth, a date that is hardly possible with his parents marrying on 18 April 1886. This is from his June 1917 World War I Draft Registration Card: Walter was born at 22 August 1891 at Yorktown, Delaware County and is living at RR#1, Yorktown. He is working an electrician for Gaylord Engineering and Construction Company in Indianapolis. Walter is 18 years in April 1910. In January 1920 census, Walter is 26 years, he is “plumbing in a plumber shop”, and he is in his parents’ household. Walter is in his father’s Muncie household in April 1930 and Walter is bridge company laborer, although he had not worked since 21 February. In his 1934 second marriage application he had divorced in December 1908 and he is a machinist residing in Muncie. This is from the April 1940 Muncie census: Walter is 47 years and he had completed the 8th grade of school. He owns his 1001 West 17th Street home valued $1500. The last week of March 1940 he worked 56 hours as a railroad company watchman and in 1939 he worked 52 weeks, earning $960. On his 1942 World War II Draft Registration Card, he reported he was born at Cammack, Delaware County; he and Esther are living at 901 West 17th, Muncie; and he is working for the Big Four Railroad (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis Railway affliated with the New York Central Railroad), Muncie. According to page 378 of Delaware County Marriage Book 44, Reverent Wilbur Polharmes married them. At the time of marriage, she resided in Muncie of Delaware County and her parents resided at Wheeling in Carroll County, Indiana. According to the April 1940 census, she is 38 years and she had completed the 8th grade. She is the census informant. She died at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. (Note: I was told that they had another son James Riley Secrist.) A45731 MARY MELINDA SECRIST Born MUNCIE, DELAWARE CO, INDIANA 11-JUN-1938 Mary is one year in April 1940. According to her marriage record, when she married Anthony, she lived at home at 901 West Main Street in Muncie, Indiana. After her husband’s death, she lived in Muncie, but later may have moved to Fort Wayne. MARY married MUNCIE, DELAWARE CO, INDIANA 01-JUN-1974 to A45731S ANTHONY JAMES COATS Born MARION, GRANT CO, INDIANA 01-JUN-1938 Died 29-OCT-1984 Parents: ARTHUR JAMES COATS and WILLIE _______ The following is according to their marriage record found on page 88 of Delaware County Marriage Book 120: • His father was born at Tipton County, Indiana, and his mother in West Virginia. (The place appeared to be Lipton, but we assume that it was Tipton.) • Magistrate James E. Philips married them. • Previously, Anthony was married and widowed with no children. • He worked at Delco Battery and lived at 2309 Meeker Street in Muncie. |
