CAUTION* Be sure to look below all the rest of Joseph's information to see notes regarding research on this family.
Birth*between 1810 and 1815 Joseph Thompson was born between 1810 and 1815 at South Carolina Age 35 in 1850 census, age 50 in 1860 census, both say born SC.
CAUTION* Joseph Thompson and Elizabeth (__________) have the following CAUTIONARY INFORMATION: Another potential mother for Joseph is this Elizabeth who was in Gilmer County in 1850. However, she was from North Carolina, and the other candidate mother was from South Carolina.
(Witness) CAUTION Joseph Thompson, Aaron Thompson and Ruth (__________): have the following CAUTIONARY INFORMATION: Joseph's potential parents could be this Aaron and Ruth They are old enough that it is reasonable to assume there might have been children prior to the ones shown on the 1850 census. Ruth and children are not in the same militia district, but still not that far apart.
Quoting Annelise "Looking through the census info at this time, there are very few Thompsons in Gilmer coming from South Carolina at this time. I was intrigued to realize that your Joseph Thompson also came from South Carolina. I also noted that his first child was born in 1845 in Georgia, also indicating he arrived in Gilmer at approximately the same time as our family. Also that he named one of his daughters Rutha (perhaps after his mother Ruth?) All interesting parallels that make me wonder if he could be part of our family? Perhaps an older brother, newly married that moved to Gilmer the same time his parents did. Of course he wouldn't show up in the 1850 census with them since he was married."1
Event-Misc*  At Gilmer Co., Georgia, Joseph Thompson had the following misc event: 1840 census entries are:
John Thompson 1011001-111001001
Linard Thompson 110001-11001
Erwin Thompson 001120001-00011001
John is probably the John E Price that was Captain of Mounted Volunteers of Gilmer Co from May 1838-Jul 1838 for Cherokee & Creek Indian War. He had a Samuel I Thompson as a private and a Samuel B Price on his military payroll.
Unknown how or if Linard or Erwin are related.
(Witness) History He witnessed Georgia counties immediately around Gilmer: Fannin to the north, Pickens/Cherokee to the south, Murray to the west, and Lumpkin, Davison, & Union to the east. East of them are several including Rabun. The NC counties in the vicinity are Cherokee, Clay, & Macon. SC counties in the vicinity are Pickens/Oconee, Pendleton, Anderson, Greenville, Spartanburg, Laurens, & Abbeville. at Georgia.

Census1870*1870 Joseph Thompson appeared on the 1870 census as the head of household, an unknown place . His info on the census included WHERE ON EARTH DID THIS FAMILY DISAPPEAR TO FOR THE 1870 CENSUS?
NOT IN FOLLOWING: Gilmer, Murray, Fannin (GA), or in what's readable of Blount, (AL). Most Thompsons in SC 1870 index are black. One white Joseph age 53 Spartanburg has wife Margaret & has black Thompsons next door. There is a possible on pg 463 of Cicero Twnshp, Tipton Co IN, a 60 year old farmer b.GA, living on farm of Isaac Collings, but he is a farm laborer and there is no apparent connection other than employee. The Joseph age 56 on pg 487 Monroe Twp, Morgan, IN is not him. The Joseph age 56 on pg 225 VanBuren Twn, Madison, IN is not him.

Negative  The 1840 census has another Thompson in Gilmer who is NOT related.
Samuel J Thompson died 1860 and possibly changed name from Burk. He was born in Elizabethtown PA about 1805, then to Ashville NC. He marr Sarah Carter 1810 in Bunscomb Co NC then to Gilmer county circa 1834-37. This per conversation with Peggy McCarley who was G Grdau of Samuel thru his son James J.
Gene Teague is also descended from this Samuel and confirms that Samuel J was born Burke and took on Thompson name as he was raised by them. Peggy address Rt 1 Box 182-P Blue Ridge TX 75004 phone 214-752-5090 - her Root Celler entries (30166) were: James J Thompson resided 1850 Gilmer (her grandfather), Lidia Thompson died 1875 Gilmer, and Samuel J Thompson died 1860 (g grandfather).
