Reverend Grice Conducts Last Rites for 91 Year old Pioneer Resident
     Services were held last Friday for Andrew Jackson Mathews following his death at his home on West Main Street Thursday. Last rites were conducted by Reverend Phil Grice of the First Methodist Church and Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery with Martin's Funeral Home in charge.
     Mr. Mathews was 91 years old at the time of his death and one of Starkville's oldest citizens.
     Born in Kosciusko October 14, 1856, he moved here about 37 years ago. During his active years he was in the contracting business. He was a life long member of the Methodist Church and at one time belonged to the Woodmen of the World. His wife died about seven years ago.
     He leaves two daughters, Mrs. A. Z. Sanders, Starkville, and Mrs. John McIlwain, Artesia; and three sons, W. M. Mathews of Mauldin, Missouri; F. L. Mathews of Hattiesburg; and A. J. Mathews, Jr., of Russellville, Arkansas.
     Grandchildren surviving are: Mrs. Brown Adkin of Hot Springs, Arkansas, L. B. Brannan of West Memphis, Arkansas; Mrs. Roy Bush of Kennett, Missouri; A. J. Mathews, III and Frank Mathews of Mauldin, Missouri; Mrs. T. R. Leinert of Brooklyn, N. Y; Mrs. Dorothy Oberst, Mrs. Florence DeBottis and Lydia Sylvia McIlwain of Artesia; Mrs. Glenn Dawson and Mrs. V. L. Conrad of California.
     He leaves 16 great grand children and one great great grandchild, Michael Schuffler of Pasadena, California.
     Active pall bearers were: Gus Hogan, Will Clardy, Willie Templeton, William Schoeneman, Shuler Cook, and L. M. Prichard.1
