Have Been Married More Than
A Half A Century
     Mr. and Mrs. John W. Bassett, well-known residents of this city, yesterday celebrated at their home on Race street, the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage. The couple were married January 21st 1862 at the home of the then bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Harding, near Church Creek. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett went to live in Bucktown district, on a farm near the present Little Blackwater Bridge, and lived there only a short time, when they removed to the Mitchell farm, at Bucktown, near Bucktown camp ground; they resided there 28 years, during which time they raised eight children. They were prosperous and accumulated considerable property.

     In addition to the eight children and their families, Mr and Mrs. Bassett have thirty grandchildren living, one of whom is married being the wife of Mr. Thos. Bradley of Secretary.
     Despite their advanced years, both Mr. and Mrs. Bassett enjoy fairly good health. Mr. Bassett was 75 last November, and were it not for his white beard, might be taken for a man much younger. Mrs. Bassett is 70, but does not look more than 60. They have lived in Cambridge eleven years, having removed here from the farm at Sale, after living upon it eight years. Obituary Her obituary: at Dorchester Co., Maryland, Mrs. Elizabeth Bassett, widow of the late John W. Bassett, Sr., died at her home at the corner of Race and Cemetery avenue last night about eight o'clock, aged seventy eight years last October. She had been ill for some little time with a complication of diseases and Saturday sustained a fall which hastened the end.
     She is survived by seven children, William Bassett, of Dune, La; Prof. Leonard Bassett of Pine Bluff, Ark; Roland Bassett, of Cambridge, Mrs. Hampton LeCompte, Mrs. Geo. H. Twilley, Mrs. Martin Wright and Mrs. Herbert Goslin, all of this city. She is also survived by thirty three grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
