Obituary | 18 May 2007 | His obituary: on 18 May 2007 at Grand Junction Free Press, Mesa Col, Colorado, Grand Junction (CO) Free Press Two dead in Hwy. 141 accident By Paul Shockley Free Press Staff Writer May 18, 2007 Comment Print Friendly Print Email Email Colorado State Patrol investigators on Thursday were looking at a driver’s medical condition for answers on why a car drifted off the highway north of Gateway, killing two passengers including the driver’s husband. Trooper Ron Greasley said the woman driver of a blue Chevrolet Lumina sedan, who wasn’t immediately identified by authorities pending the notification of family, uses medical oxygen and investigators were looking into the possibility she may have blacked out behind the wheel. Greasley said all occupants of the car were in their “mid-to-late 70s.” The State Patrol said the sedan was traveling northbound around 9:35 a.m. on Highway 141 around milepost 135 — 25 miles north of Gateway — when it drifted toward the left side of the road, into the oncoming traffic lane and off the road. The sedan slammed head-on into the edge of a culvert. Troopers said the impact vaulted the car over a driveway before it came to a stop. Two men, including the driver’s husband, who was riding in the rear seat of vehicle, were pronounced dead at the scene. The second man killed, who rode in the front passenger’s seat, was described by troopers as a friend of the married couple. The driver was extricated a half-hour after the accident and was transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital. Her condition wasn’t known late Thursday. Greasley said the driver was wearing her seatbelt. The men weren’t restrained. Neither speed, drugs or alcohol appear to be factors in the accident, Greasley said. An official with the Mesa County Coroner’s Office said identities of the men killed in the accident would not be released until today. kjct8.com Three People Died In Gateway Car Crash In order to be safe, you need to "click it or ticket" Posted: 3:58 PM, May. 18, 2007 Last Updated: 10:01 AM, May. 20, 2007 By Kalani Pe'a, Assignment Editor The third person involved in Thursday's car crash near Gateway has died. According to Mesa County Coroner's office, Arlene Vanlandingham, 72, of Gateway was pronounced dead at 10:35 a.m. Friday morning. She was taken to the hospital Thursday with serious injuries. 77-year-old William Crain and Robert Russell, 71, from Gateway died at the scene. The accident occurred about 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning on Hwy 141 north of Gateway.Drugs, alcohol and speed are not believed to have played a role in the crash, but a medical problem maybe to blame. The vehicle missed a curb and went head first in a ditch. Colorado State Patrol said all of the victims did not wear their seat belts involving the driver and passengers. Colorado State Patrol added, "Seatbelts save lives, wear them." Beginning Monday, May 21, law enforcement in Colorado will be taking this day, a crucial day for everyone, requiring all drivers and passengers to buckle up. "Click it or Ticket" is the slogan and people need to buckle up for their own safety and security. |
