In nearly all Covey Family Trees, James Covey, born 1687 is listed as born in Westerly, RI, in 1687 and died there in 1729.
Yet, there are land records that show a James Covey of Stonington, CT., was aquiring land in Westerly from 1731 to 1739. Seems it would have to be James, 1687, as all other James Coveys were either dead, not in Stonington, or too young.
His son James, born 1715, would have been 16 at the first aquisition and 23 at the last I found recorded. Thus, he seems an unlikely candidate. (See Below.)
Sooooo, who was buying the land ten years after James, 1687, allegedly died? Is there a James Covey I have missed?
Could the date of his death be wrong?

     Subsequent posts in thread:
I have James Coveys death date as March 10, 1734/35, I am looking through my records to see where I got that date...
Some of the land records, could be sold after his death.. such as the quit claim...This one says late of Westerly, this usually means the late James Covey, which is deceased..
Page 215, Thomas Burdick to James Covey late of Westerly... quit claim, related to deed dated 1711, June 13, 1738. Witness: Samuel Hubart Burdick and Mary Neff.
Just a thought... or a guess..
Some of the deeds say related to deed of 1711, which was when it originated.. it could be the last date was when the land was sold off in 1738-39. It could take 2 to 5 years to sale off an estate with lands.....after death.
I will check and see if I can come up with any more info.
Linda
Thanks for responding so quickly. I have been studying these records for a week. You asked all the questions I did.
"Late of Westerly" means, he lived there lately. In fact as of 1731. He had a fight with the Sabbatarian Church and he and Hope moved to Stonington, Connecticut. Right across the road, almost. The deeds say he is of Stonington, Ct., while the land is in Westerly, RI.
If you look at the first piece of land, 1731, given as a gift in a quit claim from the seller, says land is IN POSSESSION OF James Covey at the time of the 1731 transaction. I also have the description and boundries of the land, and it says, OWNED by James Covey, 1731.
As to the 1711 date, it seems a whole swack of land was made available to settlers in that year. So, possession of much of the land purchased in Westerly, would have originated in 1711.
According to the records listing, the first name is the seller and the second is the buyer. In each case, James Covey is the second name, which represents he was the living recipient.
Thomas Burdick, if not mistaken, died in 1737 or 1738.
And finally, James Covey allegedly died in Westerly, RI, so my assumption is that he eventually moved back to occupy the land he bought.
If you find a firm source for his death, I will take back all that I have said. I'll keep my fingers crossed, as I am really perplexed.
     Thanks for the effort.
Karen
Whoops! made a mistake. The reason James and Hope moved to Stonington, Ct. was because the town fathers were planning to spilt the town of Westerly in two parts and the two did not believe the populace had enough money to support that. So, they booked.
Had to be between 1731 and 1734, when he shows up in Stonnington, not Westerly.
Karen
     Thank you for the information...
I was looking through some of my data, I have the Covey Family by Larry and Ardela Covey, and Ancestors and Descendants of Walter Covey,(NY) by Mary Quist... I did not find any death dates for James b. 1687 in them. I am looking through some of my Covey Cousin booklets by Rita Ackerman.. I think this is where I found the death date of March 10, 1735-36 RI or Ct., but still would not have proven proof of death date, just what someone posted in the books.
There is also a book on Lanphere andf Related Family by Edward Lanphere..which I do not have... it lists Sarah and James Covey.
So no answers to the questions.....
Thanks, Linda
Thanks anyway. As I have this documentation and no else seems to have such to fully support a date, will use death after 1739. Thus, not tying into an erroneous date, and showing only what is documented.
That is, until someone comes up with more definite proof.
Again, thanks. Maybe someone else will see the message and provide some data.
Karen.
