William Covey Sr

M, #10056, b. 18 June 1765, d. 19 October 1845
Father*Father of Wm Covey (Possibly named John)
Mother*Mother of Wm (__________)
ChartsPedigree - mother Sarah Gertrude "Sally" Jones
Reference3G Grf, B52
Birth*18 June 1765 William Covey Sr was born on 18 June 1765 at Albany Co., New York,      Born in Dutchess county per son Edward's bio.
Birth place of Cambridge is per Landphere chart by Sickler and DAR stuff but son's death cert says father born CT. However, Cambridge wasn't formed til 1788 (check this fact). "born June 18, 1765" from daughter Anna's Bible.
In 1983 a letter from Gertrude Seaman, the local historian said: "Mr Covey is believed to have come from Dutchess county...." (J.S. Masters, Otsego Jrl, 1883).1
Military* He was in the military at Albany Co., New York, New York in the Revolution as Colony and State, by James A Roberts, 2nd edition 1898, pg 234 (SLC 974.7 M28n 1898) shows him as a private in Captain Peter Van Wort's 13th regiment, Albany County militia with Land Bounty rights granted by New York State.
Need to get someone to search the bounty lands to see if he ever "entered" the land.
Marriage*23 December 1781 He married Esther Yarns on 23 December 1781 at Probably, Cambridge, Washington (then Albany) Co., New York, "married December 23, 1781."1
(Witness) History1784 William Covey Sr witnessed county changed name from Charlotte county, which was previously Albany county in 1784 at Washington Co., New York.
(Witness) History1788 He witnessed Cambridge incorprated by patent, formed as town in Albany County 1788, annexed to Washington County 1791 in 1788 at Cambridge, Albany Co., New York.
Census1790*August 1790 He was the head of the household in the 1790 census, Cambridge, Albany Co., New York, with Willm (sic) Covey 1m 4f near Hope & James (currently Washington Co).
(Witness) History1791 He witnessed William Covey believed to have lived in Rensselaer county previous to locating in Butternuts. This is explained because the area where Cambridge is located was in Rensselaer county in 1791 when Rensselaer was formed from Albany county. That area (Cambridge) later became Washington county. in 1791 at Cambridge, Rensselaer Co., New York.
MovedTocirca 1795 He moved to Butternuts, Otsego Co., New York, circa 1795 per 1983 letter from Gertrude Seaman, the local historian who wrote:      Settled on lot 58 (Morris patent), town of Butternuts, about 1795 on the farm later owned by Tho. Wallin. (This on back road between the Frones and Copes Corners in the Shaw distr.) "Mr Covey is believed to have come from Dutchess county, but previous to locating here had lived in Rensselaer county. Some of the name resided in Granville, Washington Co., NY." (J.S. Masters, Otsego Jrl, 1883).
Census1800*1800 He was the head of the household in the 1800 census, pg 4 of 7, Butternuts, Otsego Co., New York, with 1m0-10 (James) 1m10-16 (sic, s/b 0-10, William) 1m26-45 (William) 3f0-10 (Anna, Abigail, Betsy) 3f10-16 (Eunice, Hannah, Phebe) 1f16-45 (Esther)
probable brother Hope on pg 1 of 7 with 1m10-16, himself 26-45, 2f0-10, 1f10-16 and 1f26-45.
Event-Misc5 January 1801  On 5 January 1801 at Butternuts, Otsego Co., New York, William Covey Sr had the following misc event: William's house was purchased in 1801, and built prior to that time, according to the "Building-Structure Inventory Form" . The owner in 1991 is Karen Grabo RD 1 South New Berlin NY 13843 607-783-2031. Her grandmother is Marion Lilley who is mentioned in house survey. Karen's mother is Margaret Lilley, the town librarian 607-783-2832 in 1991.
Other tidbits in the building inventory tells us that it's located on Wilber Hill Rd, just off River Rd in Butternuts. It is in the west half of the Morris Patent Lot #58, and was of the earliest homes to be built in the area, probably about the same time as the Marion Lilley house, nearest neighbor just up the River Rd.
William purchased the house from S. Herrington, 5 Jan 1801 (bk L pg 238) "together with all and singular hereditaments and appurtances ... land and premises ..." indicating that buildings, probably the house and barn, were already there.
The three pages of the building inventory can be seen here:

Event-Misc*1802  In 1802 at Butternuts, Otsego Co., New York, William Covey Sr had the following misc event: Have Musson's Store 'Day Book' 1802 entries with him & Daniel, Hope, John, Joseph, & Kingsbury Covey (Evd 933)
Posted 5 May 1999 to Covey list:
A while back I promised to post the Covey entries in this book. William would be my Wm born 1765 died 1845, and married to 1) Esther Yarns, 2) Betsey Coon (mine), and 3) Nancy Smith. The names Hope and Kingsberry prove there is *some* connection with the descendants of the 1640 immigrant, but just exactly who are these people? Since William's first son wasn't born until 1797, then these names have to be his contemporaries or elders. Are they brothers? uncles? cousins? Who is Daniel? The only Daniels in the Quist book are all born after this time period. And of course, which John, which Hope, which Joseph, which Kingsberry? I suspect the latter 3 are the sons of James & Mary (Lanphere) Covey, but where do Daniel and John fit in, and how does William fit in with the rest?
Covey Entries in the day Book for the store of William Musson in the town of Butternuts, Otsego County NY (Day Book covers 7 May 1802 to 23 Feb 1803)
The original book is at the public library in Butternuts, in the basement genealogy collection. The book can be looked at, but copies only from the typed extract. Spellings are as in the typed extracts. To clarify the difference between an entry being actually 1/2 versus half, when there is a fraction, I've put the fraction in [brackets]. Example for Joseph, that is one and a half yards of callico and 8/four and a half.
